Greek immigrants established Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in 1916. On September 11, 2001, St. Nicholas Church was completely demolished.
The Reconstruction of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was initiated immediately after 9/11/2001. The new church will be much more than an ordinary parish; it will become a spiritual monument, a place of worship offering serenity and restfulness to all who will visit.
The World Trade Center Master Plan, developed by the Studio of Daniel Libeskind for the Port Authority under the direction of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp-oration, has provided a site for the recon-struction of Saint Nicholas Church within a new park. Located at the intersection of Liberty and Greenwich streets, It will be easily approachable by all. The plan and program have been developed to make appropriate use of the site and to provide facilities appropriate for a place of worship, contemplation, reflection, and education. Expected completion in 2014. |
